We enjoyed the Shannon estuary and Loch Derg, the largest lake on the Shannon River in County Clare. As we head towards Northern Ireland we stay at Aisleigh Guesthouse in Knock Na Shee, Carrick-on-Shannon. We are now at the start of the River Shannon.
We plan to go white-water kayaking on a safe part of the river, but nearby attractions include:
Boyle Abbey - the ruins of a 12th Century Cistercian monastery, but destroyed by Cromwellian forces.
Strokestown Park House (Palladian House) - is a kind of time capsule. When sold in 1979 it had been in the one family for over 300 years. The faded grandeur and fascinating collections in this atmospheric mansion, give unique insights into the everyday life in the Irish country house. Co-located, the National Famine Museum provides the contrast of life of the poor. An annual six-day walk traces the route taken by 167 parishioners from Strokestown to Dublin to escape the famine.
Arigna Mining experience - The Derreenavoggy Mine operated in Roscommon from the 1700s to 1990. It was reopened as a visitor attraction in 2003 with underground tours.
